Fossar supports young cancer patients
Kraftur’s highest individual grant to date
Fossar Markets’ Thanks Day raised 6.771.518 ISK to be awarded to Kraftur, a non-profit foundation supporting young people who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families.
Haraldur Þórðarson, CEO of Fossar Markets, presented Ástrós Rut Sigurðardóttir, chairman of Kraftur, with the collection, in Fossar’s main office at Fríkirkjuvegur in Reykjavik, on Thursday 30 November.
70 young people are diagnosed each year
Fossar Markets’ Thanks Day 2017 was held for the third time on 23 November. It is an annual event where Fossar Market’s collected service fees on that day are all awarded to a deserving cause. The Thanks Day also enjoys the support of the Nasdaq Iceland stock exchange and the settlement company T plus. Both waive their fees on the occasion to support the charity.
“We are very pleased with Fossar’s endeavour and grateful for the support being shown to us. Kraftur has never, since its foundation in 1999, received a higher single contribution. It will be put to good use in Kraftur’s operations. Around 70 people aged 18 to 40 are diagnosed with cancer in Iceland each year,” says Ástrós Rut Sigurðardóttir, Kraftur’s chairman.
Clients welcome the effort
“Since we started the Thanks Day it has been escalating steadily and we are very grateful for how well it has been received,” says Haraldur Þórðarson, CEO of Fossar Markets. Last year around four million ISK were awarded to the Children’s Hospital in Reykjavík, and the year before Mæðrastyrksnefnd, an association of women that supports those in need, was supported.
“This year’s result exceeded our most optimistic expectations and we are happy to announce that this year we collected nearly 6,8 million ISK, which we have now given to Kraftur. We would especially like to thank our clients for their help, as well as Nasdaq Iceland and T plus for their contribution,” Þórðarson says.
Kraftur runs an emergency fund
„The foundation’s main goal is to support young people who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families, i.e. with peer-support, standing guard over people’s interests, and by providing information and education. Kraftur also runs an emergency fund aiming to support young people who have been diagnosed with cancer and have fallen into financial straits because of high costs relating to their illness, for instance loss of income, or because of treatment to preserve fertility,” Sigurðardóttir says.
